Enterprise architecture (EA) tools allow organizations to examine both the need for and the impact of change. They capture the interrelationships and interdependencies within and between an ecosystem of partners, operating models, capabilities, people, processes, information, and applications and technologies. They provide a central repository to capture data and metadata about the artifacts that an enterprise cares about and their related life cycles. Models represent the relationships between these artifacts and are themselves treated as assets that help describe and shape the future of the enterprise. EA tools help with investment decisions for both IT and the broader enterprise. When models are combined with operational performance data, they can help improve business outcomes and shape the construction and ongoing development of digital platforms.

My overall experience with ADOIT has been positive. The product was used as part of a university course on Enterprise Architecture (EA) that I took as a student and later (1 year ago) taught as a lecturer. The deployment objective of the product was to provide a tool for modeling interconnected enterprise architectures, including visualizations and analyses. ADOIT helped in achieving this goal by being easy to use while still providing all the necessary capabilities and functionalities for EA modeling. In terms of support, ADOIT was excellent. We were provided with an administrative license in advance, which also included already established student group accesses according to the students registered for the course. No technical issues have come up yet. Additional help was rarely needed, but if it was, a corresponding solution was always provided immediately. One of the pros of ADOIT is the ease of use and the variety of advanced functionalities available. However, I have not measured the ROI (no investment needed from my side) or quantified any productivity enhancements based on my experience. In summary, my experience with ADOIT has been positive, and I found the product to be an effective tool for modeling interconnected enterprise architectures. The support and service provided by ADOIT were also excellent.

The EA marketplace is robust with more than several dozen serious competitors. Some specialize in specific platforms or clouds. Others offer deeper integration with business intelligence (BI) and business process management (BPM) software. Some began life as generic modeling software; others were purpose-built for enterprise architecture. All compile long lists of machines and offer various tabular and graphical dashboards for tracking them.

The Atoll Group created SAMU EA Tool to track enterprise architecture by examining deep connections throughout on-prem hardware, the cloud layer, and BPM tools. It offers integration with monitoring tools (Tivoli, ServiceNow, etc.), cloud virtualization managers (VMware, AWS, etc.), configuration management databases (CA, BMC), and service organization tools (BMC, HP). These integrations feed a centralized data model that is augmented with input from stakeholders.

The Business Architecture tool from Capstera focuses on creating a map of the business architecture itself. The value and process maps help define and track the roles of the various sections of the business. The connections to the underlying software and tools can be added along the way.

Planview offers a constellation of products for tracking teamwork, processes, and enterprise architecture. Its enterprise tools are broken into three tiers for Strategic Portfolio Management, Product Portfolio Management, and Project Portfolio Management. Together they create databases of machines and software layers that deliver role-based views for managers and team members. The tool is integrated with common ticket-tracking systems such as Jira for creating workflow analytics and reporting. Planview has integrated tools formerly known as Daptiv, Barometer, and Projectplace that were acquired during a merger.

The collection of tools from ServiceNow are broken down to focus on particular types of the architecture, including Assets, DevOps, Security, or Service. They catalog the various machines and software platforms to map and understand the various workflows and dataflows in the enterprise. Careful analysis of the reports and dashboards can minimize risk and build resilience into the system.

Enterprise architecture has been critical to helping businesses navigate the pandemic to ensure business continuity, reimagine their business and operating models, and identify the tools to survive and ultimately thrive in a post-COVID world.

The need for digital transformation has led enterprise architects to think about EA based on insights and outcomes throughout the architectural products. Architectural products are configurations of business capabilities to facilitate customer journeys, value chains, products and customer lifecycles, thus bringing the enterprise architecture much closer to the roles of product managers, customer success managers, digital platform and marketing experts.

With that said, tools need to retain the traditional EA approaches to inspire architecture. They need to have the functionality to be built on and work up the underlying business operating models to deliver outcomes and to demonstrate real value.

Next, they propose a combination of building blocks that provides the best possible fix. This process is very detail-oriented and serves as a connecting piece between enterprise architecture and technical architecture. It also requires a breadth of knowledge in the technical and business inner workings of the company.

Compared to the solution and enterprise architect, technical architects take the most hands-on approach during the execution of IT projects. Most technical architecture specialists focus on one single implementation and specialize in a particular domain where they also define best practices.

The figure below illustrates the amount of strategic and technological input that each type of IT architect contributes to a project: Enterprise architects have a high strategy focus and less of a technology focus, while it is the other way around for technical architects. The solution architect bridges the gap between concept and implementation by acting like a channel between enterprise architecture and technical architecture.

Just like enterprise architects, solution architects need excellent communication skills. A lot of their time is spent coordinating ongoing activities and negotiating the needs of all involved parties.
